Letter 1: Support Bill C-225 …

Dear (Name of MP),

Re: Support for Bill C-225 (“Bailey’s Law”)

I am writing as a constituent in your riding to urge you to support Bill C-225, also known as Bailey’s Law. This legislation proposes important changes to the Criminal Code to strengthen Canada’s response to intimate partner violence and better protect those at risk.

Bill C-225 would recognize the unique and often escalating nature of intimate partner violence by creating specific intimate-partner-related offences, strengthening consequences for repeated abuse, and ensuring that the most serious cases are treated with the gravity they deserve. These measures would help improve safety for victims, increase accountability for offenders, and acknowledge the reality that intimate partner violence remains a widespread and deeply harmful issue in our communities.

I believe this bill is a meaningful step toward preventing further tragedies and ensuring our justice system responds appropriately to the dynamics of intimate partner violence. I respectfully ask that you support this legislation at every stage of the parliamentary process and advocate for its swift passage.

Thank you for your time and for your service to our community. I would welcome the opportunity to discuss this issue further should you or your staff wish to do so.

Sincerely,

(Your Name)

Letter 2: Support Bill C-225 (2) …

Subject: Please Support Bill C-225 to Address Intimate Partner Violence

Dear [MP’s Name],

I am writing to ask you to support Bill C-225, introduced on September 18, 2025, by MP Frank Caputo. This Bill is an important step toward strengthening Canada’s legal response to intimate partner violence (IPV).

IPV is the most common form of violence against women in Canada. According to Statistics Canada, it makes up about one third of all reported violent crimes, and women account for nearly 8 in 10 victims. Survivors often live with lifelong trauma, and children who witness IPV are deeply impacted.

Bill C-225 proposes practical changes, such as:

  • Making the murder of a current or former intimate partner automatically first-degree murder;
  • Creating specific IPV-related offences;
  • Requiring judges—not just automatic processes—to decide on the release of repeat IPV offenders; and
  • Allowing courts to order risk assessments and better manage seized evidence.

These measures are not extreme—they are reasonable, evidence-based, and focused on protecting victims and holding offenders accountable.

This issue is not about party politics. It’s about safety, justice, and protecting families. I hope you will support Bill C-225 and work to ensure it passes quickly.

Thank you for your time and for representing our community.

Sincerely,
[Your Name]

Letter 3: Write to MP …

Subject: Request for Your Support of Bill C-225 to Strengthen the Legal Response to Intimate Partner Violence

Dear [MP’s Name],

I am writing to urge you to support Bill C-225, introduced on September 18, 2025, by Kamloops Conservative MP Frank Caputo. This Private Member’s Bill represents a crucial step toward addressing one of the most pressing public safety and public health issues in our country: intimate partner violence (IPV).

The focus is on real issues that affect families and communities across British Columbia and Canada. Intimate partner violence is one of those issues. It is not partisan. It is not theoretical. It devastates lives, shatters families, and leaves lasting scars on children who grow up in cycles of abuse.

According to Statistics Canada, IPV represents approximately one third of all reported violent crimes. Women were overrepresented as victims of IPV, accounting for almost 8 in 10 victims. In fact, IPV was the most common kind of violence experienced by women (45% of all female victims aged 15 to 89).

Yet we know IPV is vastly underreported, leaving countless victims and families vulnerable. Survivors often face a lifetime of trauma, and children who witness this violence are deeply impacted.

Bill C-225 proposes important changes that align with the need for stronger protections and accountability, including:

  • Treating the murder of a current or former intimate partner as first-degree murder, regardless of premeditation.
  • Creating specific IPV offences such as Assault Intimate Partner and Criminal Harassment of Intimate Partner.
  • Ensuring repeat IPV offenders are only released by a judge.
  • Empowering courts to detain accused persons for risk assessments reviewed by a judge.
  • Modernizing the detention of seized evidence.

These are not extreme measures. They are reasonable, evidence-based steps that strengthen the legal framework, protect survivors, and hold repeat offenders accountable.

I believe that politics must rise above partisanship when it comes to protecting lives. Bill C-225 embodies these principles: it strengthens accountability, empowers survivors, and helps protect the most vulnerable in our communities.

The issue of IPV is not about party lines—it is about ensuring that Canadians can feel safe in their own homes. We therefore respectfully ask you, as our Liberal Member of Parliament, to stand with us in supporting this Bill and working towards its rapid passage.

Thank you for your leadership and service to our community. We hope you will add your voice to this urgent matter.

Sincerely,
